Classic Chick Flick ~ Bell, Book and Candle.

For you lovers of old magical movies, I’m reblogging a few Halloween themed posts this week, on the lead up to the 31st of October. Here’s a Witchy Romance featuring James Stewart, Kim Novak….and a siamese cat called Pyewacket. 🙂

Its that time of year when the nights are drawing in and there’s nothing more comforting than curling up with a hot chocolate ( or one of those spicy pumpkin lattes that I haven’t tried yet!) and a spooky rom com.  Bell, Book and Candle is a witchy tale set in modern day New York ( 1958 ) about a bored witch ( a sultry blonde Kim Novak) , her feline familiar ‘Pyewacket’ and the guy who moves into the flat upstairs.

The film starts with a festive snowy street scene. It’s Christmas Eve and lonesome witch Gillian is working in her African Art shop feeling in a bit of a rut. She spies her neighbor from the flat upstairs ,  Shepherd Henderson ( James Stewart) and ponders to her siamese cat Pyewacket, that he might be a rather nice Christmas present…..

December Photo Scavenger Hunt

winter wonderland 020Joy ~ My two God daughters on a ride at Winter Wonderland earlier in the month. It was a bit of a horrible day to be totally honest, which involved getting lost, losing money, kids being sick and horrendous journey home in torrential rain and floods! However I think the girls did enjoy themselves.

Together ~ This was on Christmas Day morning and some of us got Together for a walk with the dogs in the park. We came across the deer statues looking all festive. The happy hounds here include two Bedlingtons, three labradors, a deer hound cross and a scottie. 🙂

A Festive Drink and Draw.

drink and draw 033

Drink  &  Draw  is Blackburn’s first alternative drawing class , held every month in various locations in the town.  I heard about it through a work mate and thought it would be a fun evening out!  December’s class promised to be packed full of  festive fun so four of us headed over to the lovely Liz N Lil’s  cafe bar on Northgate with our sketch books for this month’s decorative doodles. 🙂

If you are  admiring our rather dodgy jumpers and cardis, the theme was ‘Terrible Knitwear’, although I think we all look quite fetching actually. 😉

We all wondered who or what we would be drawing!  Each month a different dancer/performer/act models for the class. Previous models include a fire eater, a pole dancer and a burlesque dancer. It turned out we would be immortalising this lovely glitzy angel onto paper…..

Isn’t he stunning!  A cross between an Abba Angel and Disco Jesus? Our model struck many a pose throughout the session. Sometimes we were given one minute to draw him and other times ten.Things were mixed up a bit with fun competitions and attempts to sketch  left handed instead of right handed or vice versa. As you can see , some of us were better at this arty stuff than others. 😉

You don’t need any drawing experience to enjoy the evening ( Yup i’m talking about myself! ) and I think it would be something I would try again. Liz N lil’s is only one of the fab venues around Blackburn that have been used by Drink and Draw. Old churches, museums and even a barge have hosted the evening in the past. If you want to check out future events here is their facebook page.

“Give me him for Christmas Pye.”

A chance meeting ( well, kind of 😉 ) and Gill learns that Shep is a publisher and he’s interested in publishing the next book by the author of a guide in her shop called ‘Magic in Mexico.’ He’s also engaged to be married.  Gill’s batty Aunt Queenie ( Elsa Lancaster) and bongo playing warlock brother Nicky ( Jack Lemmon) think he might be the ideal candidate to test her supernatural  powers on. But Gill doesn’t want to cast a love spell on Shep and bans her interfering relatives from making mischief.” It might be pleasant to be humdrum once in a while” she reflects.

Lightning strikes!
Lightning strikes!

After mentioning to Shep that she and Queenie were going out to a nightclub called the ‘Zodiac Club’ that evening ,he decides to take his fiancee there for a drink. It turns out his bride to be Merle went to boarding school with Gill and used to bully her and get her in trouble for walking around barefoot ( its a witch thing!)   so Gill sees red and beckons Nicky and the orchestra to gatecrash their table. To Merle their playing resembles a crashing thunderstorm. We find out that Merle is terrified of storms and she flees the club followed by a perplexed Shep.

Love the tree. :)
Love the tree. 🙂

Back at the flat Gill and her family exchange presents round the tree. Nicky’s present to Gill is a summoning charm. She decides to use it to lure the author of ‘Magic in Mexico’ to the shop. But it is Shepherd who turns up and witnesses the three gathered round a lurid green flame. Remarking that ,”It seems more like Halloween than Christmas round here” he is easily convinced by Gill that the fireworks were just a party trick. When the others leave Shepherd tells Gill that he and Merle have now planned to get married the following day. It is then that our witch decides to use her magic on him. Humming a tune to Pyewacket she casts a Love Spell that immediately makes the publisher fall in love with her.

image

We next cut to the top of the Flatiron building ( in its time the tallest in NY)  where we see Gill and Shepherd locked in an embrace. Shep goes to break it off with a very disgruntled Merle and the two start to enjoy a magical courtship, doing the ordinary humdrum things that Gill has craved such as dinner and dancing, ice skating in Central Park and chilling in her flat. Meanwhile ‘Sidney Rednick’, the author of the Mexican magic book turns up at Shepherds office. He has an idea for a new book….about witches in New York.

bbc1

Convinced that New York is a haven for witches Sidney writes the book with the help of Nicky who has decided that he deserves a bit of recognition for being a warlock. Gill has accepted Shep’s marriage proposal even though she knows he is under her spell. But something has happened to our witch. Witches don’t cry. Witches don’t blush. When witches fall in love they lose their powers and their familiars leave them.  Pyewacket scarpers to go and live with Aunt Queenie. Is it possible that Gillian has fallen in love after all??

To see how the story ends….you really should rent the movie. Arnt I mean!  Go on , it’s the purrrfect spellbinding Halloween film. 🙂 .

Whats your favorite magical movie?

A bloggers Christmas gift swap.

My most anticipated present to open this Christmas was without a doubt a well wrapped parcel I recieved in the post.

I took part in Janet’s ‘Thrifty Christmas Gift Swap’ which she has organized in the past too. I’m glad she decided to do it again this year.

Janet who blogs at Words that can only be your own made sure that everyone was randomly given a name of someone also taking part to buy for. I ended up getting Janet herself. No presure there then! :))

The aim was to be thrifty with your purchases.Find or make little gifts. Look in charity shops etc. Here is what I got Janet.

image

I made her a teacup candle ( I can’t sew , but I can make candles! ) as she likes vintage treasures. I also purchased a couple of cute and Christmassy brooches made by talented craft fair friends and luckilly Janet loves this time of year so a birdie tree decoration went in the box too. Finally I found a book of short stories by feminist authors from a second hand book shop in my home town. I think they went down well.:)

image

I too recieved a package in the post and above are all the lovely goodies that it contained! I was delighted when I saw that my parcel was from Louisa. Her blog Duck In A Dress is another of my faves. 🙂

image

Louisa really did her homework as all her gifts were so thoughtful and I love them all. She truelly spoilt me! Look at my beautiful Cath Kidston mug and Christmas card.

image

There were edible Christmas goodies galore too ,including a tasty selection of baked goods from her local farm shop Farringtons.

image

There was even a mini bottle of prosecco to wash them down with. And my goodies came with Alice in Wonderland ‘Eat Me’ and ‘Drink Me’ tags.

My favourite item from Louisa is without a doubt this childrens book from 1949 called ‘Plant and Animal Ways’.

image

It is packed full of gorgeous wildlife illustrations. Its an American publication and chapters include ‘Slippers and Sliders’ ( about snakes!), ‘Monkey Manners’ and ‘Fiddle Heads, Fronds and Ferns’. 🙂

Thanks to Janet for organizing the swap and Louisa for my fab pressies. X

Merry Christmas :-D

Just one more day of pre Christmas madness in my job ( work in a supermarket ) so expecting to witness a few mad trolley dashes for the last sprout/ wedge of stilton, before I get away this evening! Plan doing absolutely nothing tonight except cracking opening the wine, munching on mince pies and watching some Christmas telly. Oh and I have to wrap a few bits up for Hugo.I suspect our pup will want to get in on any unwrapping action tommorrow.:)

Its just Wil and I on Christmas day ( apart for a planned little Xmas morning walk with some pals and their pooches) so I’m looking forward to a nice relaxing time. I really can’t wait!

Anyway I wish all my blogging friends and folk who do me the honor of dropping by my little piece of cyber space occasionally ~ a very Merry Christmas. Xx

Yet to experience….Some Wintery Firsts.

I realised only the other day that I have never, ever ……tasted Egg Nog , the sweet egg, cream and bourbon based drink so symbolic of festive cheer. That got me thinking, what other wintery traditions and treats have I yet to experience?? Here are a few things I have still never tried in all my ( cough ! 41 shhhh..) Christmases.

Make a snow angel in the snow.

Try Wassail ~ a mulled cider drink.  I have now made my own Mulled Cider in a slow cooker, with bottled cider, a clove filled orange and cinnamon sticks, but have yet to try the traditional Wassail.

Keep my hands warm and cosy in a toasty muff.

Go to Midnight Mass.

Get my Hygge on and buy a Danish Pancake Pan and make Danish Pancakes known as Ebelskivers.

Have a Skiing Lesson in the Snow.

Cook Christmas Dinner !  Sorry, I am no domestic goddess. 😉

Watch Frozen.  Aaaah I have watched Frozen since writing this post originally.

Go Ice skating outdoors.

Spend Christmas in another Country.

Take part in a Boxing Day Swim. Brrrrrrrrr!! No thanks!!

Tenby Boxing Day Swim.

Visit Lapland. My sister has been with her kids and a friend is taking her daughter this year. Sooo jealous!

Is there anything in my list that you have yet to try? What would be on your winters ‘ Yet to experience’ list? I would love to know.:))

A Christmasy weekend. :)

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  I guess that particular phrase is starting to pop up everywhere at the moment….but in my case ,it felt quite true for me at the weekend. 🙂

On Saturday I met up with a couple of friends in town and we had lunch and did a bit of Christmas shopping. It was Shop Local wknd so it was nice to wander round the little independant shops, small towns like my home town of Clitheroe have in abundance. I’m trying to buy as much as I can from these smaller businesses this year as they really do offer something a little different to the gifts you can find in the more well known stores.

image

I love the Christmassy drinks you can try in December. A friend and I enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate called ‘The Purple One’ inspired by my favourite Quality Street. 🙂

image

Just thought I would show you this Frozenesque ( Is that a word? 🙂 ) wedding gown in the window of ‘Orchid Designs’ in Clitheroe. I have walked passed it several times and wondered who will be the fairytale bride. I’m not sure if you can see clearly…but look at the blue snowflakes on the train.

And below is the Crib that goes up near the Castle. As soon as the little nativity figures are put in , the town feels so much more Christmassy.

xmas deca 005

On Sunday I went round to my friend Beckys and helped put the decorations up. My niece and nephew came too and we had fun with glitter, glue, crayons, paper, scissors and a singing dancing Christmas tree. Total chaos but lots of fun!

So the best thing so far about the build up to Christmas has been spending happy times with family and friends. Ho Ho Ho.And to round up this post here is a photo of little Hugo. I really must get him some antlers! 🙂
