Ice Cold In Haworth.

Here I am snug as a bug in a rug. The radiators are piping hot , I have numerous throws to wrap round myself and two fur babies to snuggle up with. Bliss !

Friday night though was spent ( mostly shivering!) In a little B&B in the Yorkshire town of Haworth. I won’t say it was our accomodations fault. I couldn’t properly get warm anywhere at all. I think Yorkshire folk must be alot hardier than us Lancashire lot. The heating was on everywhere but didn’t seem to make much of a difference. I layered myself up and was tempted to keep my coat and hat on….even in bed. I have turned into a right softy!

Bronte Parsonage Museum.

Wil and I ( minus the pets) stopped over in Haworth as we were attending a talk in nearby Keighley by the Arctic adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. It certainly seemed touch and go whether the event would take place. But of course ‘ the world’s greatest living explorer’ was easily up to the challenge of travelling from Exmoor to bleakest Yorkshire, whatever the conditions. 🙂

Despite my whinging, we did have a lovely time. The snow gave the cobbled streets of Haworth a wintery charm. The town is of course, famed for being the home of an extraordinary literary family, the Bronte’s. Writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne lived in the parsonage with their father the Reverend Bronte and brother Branwell. We had the Bronte Parsonage Museum all to ourselves on Saturday morning. Photography is no longer prohibited inside the museum,so I took a few pictures and imagined the Bronte siblings sitting at the dining room table, scribbling away. How frozen must their fingers have felt in the perishing south pennine winters.

Cobbled Streets.
Howarth Railway Station.
St Michael & All Angels Church. All the Brontes apart from Anne are buried in the Bronte family crypt, beneath the church.
Old fashioned sweet shop.
A nice coffee shop with a great selection of cakes. 🙂
Peppermint tea and a ginger bun in Villette. The café is named after one of Charlotte’s novels.
Icicles.
Inside the parsonage. The Dining Room. The sisters would have wrote here at the dining table.
Mr Bronte’s study. Emily and Anne both played the piano.
The kitchen.

The children’s tiny playroom.
Landing window.
Inside Branwell Brontes bedroom. Branwell was a troubled soul and failed to live up to the high expectations his family had of him.
A small bed embroidered with words by and about the Bronte sisters. Visitors are invited to make and unmake the tiny bed ( using the white gloves provided), to reveal the prose written in the bed clothes..

A snowy pathway.

Inside The Cabinet of Curiosities on Main Street. The shop was an apothecary even back in the days of the Bronte’s.

Book I bought from the gift shop in the Bronte Parsonage Museum.

We ended our visit to Haworth with a winter warming lunch in The Hawthorn on Main Street, whilst browsing our purchases. I bought ‘The Brief Lives of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne by Catherine Reef ( Can’t wait to start it! ) and Wil had purchased a signed copy of Ranulph Fiennes appropriately titled ‘Cold’, the evening before.

Which is your favourite Bronte sister novel?

Let it Snow …….In The Movies.

So I’m doing a bit of recycling of Christmas Posts again. 🙂 A few snowy snowy movies to enjoy this winter. Let me know of any others I can add. They don’t have to be Christmassy, just snowy. x

sunshine and celandines

We all love a Christmas film to cozy up to at this time of year…..but sometimes all it takes is a flurry of snow or even a twirl of a snowflake, to make us feel like snuggling with a mug of mulled wine. Here are just a few snowy scenes from the movies!

Yet to experience….Some Wintery Firsts.

Here’s a Christmas List with a difference. Wintery Firsts I have yet to try. Originally posted two years ago, I have updated it a bit. Are there any Winter pursuits that you have yet to sample?

sunshine and celandines

I realised only the other day that I have never, ever ……tasted Egg Nog , the sweet egg, cream and bourbon based drink so symbolic of festive cheer. That got me thinking, what other wintery traditions and treats have I yet to experience?? Here are a few things I have still never tried in all my ( cough ! 41 shhhh..) Christmases.

Make a snow angel in the snow.

Try Wassail ~ a mulled cider drink.  I have now made my own Mulled Cider in a slow cooker, with bottled cider, a clove filled orange and cinnamon sticks, but have yet to try the traditional Wassail.

Keep my hands warm and cosy in a toasty muff.

Photo an Hour ~ 19th November.

Saturday I joined in with Photo an Hour even though I was travelling back from Scotland, so I’m afraid a few of my pictures are either Car or weather related !

8am. Breakfast at the holiday cottage.Well a holiday breakfast should absolutey be coffee and croissants.:)

9am. On the road and heading for the town of Kirdcudbright, as a fellow blogger said it was nice. And she was right. ♡

10am. In Kircudbright and I really should have taken a photo of the town.Instead I am looking at my feet. My poor boots have had it.There is a hole in my right boot….and I am wandering around with one wet sock.:(

11am.  Here are some pretty Beach huts in the town that are part of an art trail.

Noon. Chippy lunch and there is a worrying sign in the Fish and Chip shop.Good chips though.:)

1pm.  Travelling companion in the back.Mr Hugo.:)

2pm.  Still in the car but nearly at my Mums, who we are dropping in on, on the way home. I’m looking through my recently aquired Belted Galloways Calander. Yep I am a farmer’s daughter alright. lol. 🙂

3pm. At Mums and we lit a tea light in this cute tea light holder my brother gave me for my birthday. 🙂

4pm.  Back in the car and I took this picture as we drove through Shap in Cumbria. Yes snow! Don’t worry I am a passenger. I’m one of life’s permanent pedestrians .

6pm. Home sweet home.I didn’t bother with a 5pm photo as we were travelling through darkness and driving rain. Nice to finally arrive in Lancashire. The fur babies are reunited. ^^

7pm. Easy tea.Pizza from Sainsburys. You obviously can’t eat in peace in our house!

8pm. Looking for somewhere to display this gorgeous present from my friend Lisa. Its a hand painted tile of ‘The Duke’ a showman’s wagon we stayed in back in July. At the moment it’s on a shelf but deserves to be hung on the wall.I am so touched that Lisa made me this.:)

9pm.  The last photo I took , watching Black Sails. Love this show! But the theme tune is quite grating. All screechy but oddly atmospheric !

Thanks as always to Louisa and Janey for organizing. 🙂

Snow Day.

snow day 012

It’s amazing what a difference a day makes  We went up to Keswick in Cumbria yesterday and there was  a covering of snow in the mountains. The snow followed us home and this morning I woke up to a world….that looks like this!

snow day 005

I thought I would share a few photos of our usual walk with Hugo before the white stuff melts. It’s been three years since we last had any snow!

snow day 007

Yep new wellies. Again!  I do not have any luck whatsoever with posh wellies. By posh I mean anything other than my trusty green dunlops. Hunters,Joules and Brakeburns all split within the last twelve months. And silly moo that I am, I mislaid each pairs receipt. This time though, my new red Barber’s ( a sale bargain) receipt is pinned to the notice board. I’m hoping I will have better luck with these…..

snow day 010

I saw a few birds feeding near the Campsite. Some kind soul always puts food out there. I was trying to take a picture of a beautiful Bullfinch who was enjoying his breakfast…but he was to quick for me.

January looks so much better in the snow!

Have you got out and about in the snow this year?

January ~ Photo an Hour.

If you are considering a fresh blogging challenge to take part in every month , why not have a go at Janey’s and Louisa’s  Photo An Hour Challenge. Every month they choose a day ( usually at the weekend) and upload a picture of what they are doing on the hour, every hour on Instagram or Twitter. It’s a great way of finding new blogs or Instagram accounts to follow. And everyone loves a bit of a nosy at someone else’s day!

January’s day was Saturday. So here’s what exciting things I got up to. I just know you are dying to find out………;0)

8am ~  Morning brew. We are planning to head up to the Lake District with Hugo.

9am ~  Hugo on the back seat in the car. He doesn’t like travelling bless him. Luckily he settled down and went to sleep.

10am ~  Whizzing past fields of snow.

11am  ~   Finally in Keswick. And down by the Lake which is full of geese. Can you spot Hugo?

Noon  ~  In Keswick looking for foodie treats for my foodie penpal. Settled on a jar of locally made Orange cheese ( Orange curd).

1pm  ~    A spot of lunch in  The Filling Station  on the outskirts of Keswick.  A Route A66 Burger and sweet potato fries. Yummy. 🙂

2pm  ~  It’s snowing hard in Keswick so the other half  says we have to head away from the snow. Slightly sulking. I had secretly packed my toothbrush and clean underwear, in the hope of getting snowed in. Oh well! Here’s the cd currently listening to in the car.

3pm  ~  We have stopped off at Kirkby Lonsdale ( no snow here yet!)  and having a walk by the river.

4pm  ~   A quick florentine from this amazing bakery in Kirkby Lonsdale. 🙂

5pm  ~   Back home and there is snow!

6pm  ~  My Saturday night was very Rock n Roll. A Hot chocolate and a magazine. I put ground ginger in the chocolate to make it a bit spicey. 🙂

7pm  ~  Tea has been slowly cooking all day. It’s Chicken curry.

8pm   ~ My last picture of the day is of my cat Slinky who has just pinched my place on the sofa. Cheeky!   The evening followed with a Bones Boxset Fest.

Thanks for dropping by. X
