Were All Mad Here ~ Callooh ! Callay Tea Rooms in Clitheroe.

Ah but where in Clitheroe can you find a White Rabbit, a March Hare, a sleepy Dormouse and a Mad Hatter taking tea? There’s a very good chance you might, at Callooh! Callay , an Alice in Wonderland inspired Tea Room on Moor Lane. If your up for a Mad Tea-party…. or simply a tea-time treat, this is the place to come. ♤♡◇♧

Now Callooh Callay has been open for a few years now. In fact I had my 40th Birthday ( or should that be Un-birthday) tea-party here, four years ago. Sob! How time flies and where’s my pocket watch. Its recently become under new ownership and happily the owners have continued with the Wonderland theme.

My friend Lisa and I bobbed in for a brew yesterday and we couldn’t resist the tempting array of cakes on display. Lisa chose a slab of delicious millionaires shortbread and I ordered a slice of starry chocolate cake. It went very well with my March Hare Perk Me Up Peppermint Tea. Delightful. 🙂

As you can see everything comes served upon lovely mis-matched vintage china. Pink flamingos adorn the cafe walls.

After our refreshments we bobbed upstairs for a nosy. There are two further rooms and a cute bathroom on the first floor.

Upstairs you can browse in the newly opened craft shop and there are plans afoot for Craft and Natter mornings.

The cafe now extends to upstairs too. I love the ambience in this cosy room. Now available to hire for private parties, the dressing up area in the corner is a nice touch. I can see my niece and god daughters loving it here. 😁

Callooh Callay is open every day 10 ~ 5pm and 12 ~ 4pm on Sundays. Maybe Alice herself will welcome you!

And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?

Come to my arms, my beamish boy!

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’

He chortled in his joy.

Its just grand at Just Grand !!

On Saturday the girls were in Leeds doing some serious shopping!  After hitting the end of Summer Sales we needed a well earned break and some of that famous Yorkshire hospitality. What better place to go than an eclectic Vintage tea room. The interior of Just Grand in the Grand Arcade is the perfect mish mash of decor from different decades and quirky touches, there are pretty teacup light fittings and menus on retro record sleeves. The  staff wear clothing from other eras. Pretty 1950s style dresses, colourful Hawaiian shirts and Rockabilly pin up frocks.:)

When we arrived it was very busy ( Its a popular place! ) so we were seated out front in the arcade.  My friend Arwen ordered a very marshmallowy Hot Chocolate that came served in a pretty vintage teacup. She also chose a ham sandwich and a rocky road cake. As for myself and Gill, we decided that yes , everything does start with tea, Afternoon tea. 🙂

The Just Grand Afternoon Tea arrived on a vintage cake stand and on the bottom tier there were four delightful finger sandwiches each, on brown and white bread. The fillings were egg, cucumber and cream cheese, cheese and ham. On the middle tier was a generous slab of homemade cake each of our choice. This was instead of the usually served  fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese. Its up to you which you would prefer. And the top tier  held our scrumptious scones which came in two varieties. Gill chose a fruit scone and I went for the apricot and ginger . It was pretty darn good!  The scones came with strawberry jam and clotted cream. All were washed down with either Yorkshire tea ( of course 😉 ) or filter coffee.

All in all our dining experience here was Just Grand indeed. A must if you visit Leeds. 🙂

Afternoon Tea at the Glass House in Ribchester.

Just in time to post for Afternoon Tea Week here is a quick review of a gloriously decadent afternoon tea in Ribchester! My sister, our friend Becky and I booked in at the gorgeous Glass House at Stydd gardens last Sunday. It was actually a treat paid for by my work ( Thank you work!) to help celebrate my long service award ( Yikes!) and what a lovely way to celebrate it was. 🙂

As you can see the restaurant is inside an old Glass House which is home to lots of beautiful tropical plants and eclectic furnishings. We were shown to our table and after choosing our drinks, English Breakfast tea for the girls and a glass of Apple juice for me, we chatted away whilst waiting in anticipation for our Afternoon tea. By the way free drink refills are encouraged. 🙂

As you can see the two tiered cake stand that the sandwiches and cakes came served on was HUGE. It was gold coloured and my photo doesn’t really do it justice. You can’t really see but it is topped with a majestic crown!

Sis can't wait to tuck in. ;)

The top tier contained an abundance of tasty finger sandwiches on white and brown bread. There were four choices of fillings ; Smoked salmon and cream cheese, Roast ham, Egg and cress, and Lancashire cheese. All were super substantial. No delicate cucumber sandwiches here!  Although i’m not a smoked salmon fan these ones were proper delish.

And look at the cakes! These beauties on the bottom tier were absolutely sublime. As you can see there are lush lemon cakes, delightful chocolate cakes, magnificent looking fruit scones with jam and clotted cream ( topped with strawberries and blueberries) and the little pots contain a fabulously fruity Eton mess. Yummy!

All this deliciousness came for only £16.95 each so it was very good value for money indeed. We couldn’t eat it all so the friendly staff boxed up any leftovers for us to take home. Afterwards there was time to wander round the gardens a little bit but unfortunately as it was Sunday the  pretty gift shops in the grounds were closing by this point. If you would like to see more piccies of the outside check out this previous post.

A Christmas brew at Callooh!

Feeling festive ( and somewhat frazzled) after listening to Christmas tunes all day 🙂 , I joined a couple of work chums for a brew and a chat in my favourite vintage tea room Callooh! Callay

Callooh is no stranger to my blog and has featured in several posts! Its a bijou Alice In Wonderland inspired cafe that serves delicious home cooked food and a varied selection of teas, named after Wonderland phrases and characters.

Since my first post two years ago , the tea room has come under new management. It is however still as lovely as ever. The tea and cakes are served in mismatched vintage china and pink flamingos are a big part of the decor. Sorry my pictures are a little dark.

As I prefer fruit teas I decided on ‘Were All Mad Here’ , a refreshing fruity burst of strawberries, elderberries, rosehips and lemongrass. My colegue K tried a black tea called ‘Cheshire Cat Got the Cream’ whils’t my other workmate C preferred a coffee. I wonder whose idea it was to order a sumptious slice of chocolate yule log.Hmmm let me see….. 😉

Before leaving we had a nosy upstairs. There are two rooms devoted to lovely gifts and vintage goodies. One of the rooms is now a new vintage venture called ‘Tumtumtree vintage’ selling clothes and other interesting bits and pieces. I have my eye on these two brass cockerels.Roll on payday!

So if your ever in Clitheroe and fancy a pot of tea and an explore in a curiosity shop, you will find Callooh! Callay on Moor Lane ~ not to far from the castle gates. Enjoy!
